This advert is located in and around Derby Hi, I am looking to give a home to a female sighthound. This advert has no user uploaded images or videos Favourite this Advert. The Lurcher is not easily defined and there are nearly countless possibilities of what constitutes one. One parent is a sight-hound usually a Greyhoundand while the other parent can be any type of dog, they are usually pastoral working dogs like Collies or Terriers. This makes for a swift, athletic hunting and racing dog that is also an excellent companion for individuals and families alike!
You will be hard pressed to find a more laid-back, people-loving hybrid than a Lurcher. This hybrid is usually low maintenance, obedient, and likely to be a couch potato indoors.
They will vary tremendously in looks and personality and we highly recommend knowing which parent breeds you desire in your Lurcher and then visiting those pages. Note, this is an excellent breed to adopt if you are considering that option.
The etymology of the "Lurcher" has been translated as interesting descriptions such as "thief mixed dog", "lurker", and even "petty swindler" but this has more to do with their past duties of hunting to feed their poor, peasant masters than their actual personality.
This mixed breed is actually very people-loving, friendly, loyal, affectionate, hard-working, athletic and calm. These sight-hound x herding dog mixes do best with active individuals or families, or with hunters or farmers that can task them with things they enjoy doing such as hunting pesky critters. A fenced yard is almost a must, however, with enough daily exercise they can live indoors--just don't allow them to become glued to the couch!
Here are some Lurch facts:. It's difficult to simply give generic Lurcher information about one type of this hybrid simply because there are so many crosses that can be labeled a Lurcher. They are sighthounds of various types crossed with usually a herding breed such as a Collie and some of the most popular sighthound parents are as follows:.
These dogs have a natural affinity for people and it is said that even one that was used and discarded and treated badly will still warm to new owners.
Depending upon which parent breeds are used in breeding, Lurchers range from obedient to moderately difficult to train. When outdoors they may be especially hard to reign in and will require enclosed fencing or they should be on leash unless they are well trained hunting partners.
Their prey instincts are high and they love chasing small creatures like squirrels, rabbits and even foxes! Training will take patience, consistency and leadership--which they will look to you for so you must be able to provide it.
Members of this breed make excellent family companions because, although they are athletic and active, they also have a lazy bone that makes them want to be couch potatoes with you when indoors. Socialize them as a puppy and they should be good with other dogs, however, even early socialization doesn't guarantee peaceful cohabitation with cats and just forget about small pets like rabbits, hamsters, etc. This breed is neither watchdog nor guard dog but keep your yard free of pests.
They may take time to warm up to strangers but are not aggressive. This breed is very swift, and athletic, not to mention capable hunters. Lurcher racing and lure coursing are still popular competitive arenas for them refer to the National Lurcher and Racing Club for breed info. In a home setting they love a large yard and plenty of toys, plus they should get an hour or so daily exercise in the form of runs Lurchers LOVE runningjogs, hikes, long walks and trips to the dog park.
Lurcher history may begin in the medieval times, and the most prominent documentation comes from the s; during this time those of noble status were the only ones that could own purebred dogs in Scotland, England and perhaps various other countries.
The crossbred Lurcher may have been purposefully bred from these purebred Sight-hounds during these times to avoid punishment, and some may have been byproduct of accidental breedings-- the noble class, of course, wouldn't want these pups. At this point Lurchers become companions of peasants and gypsies, and they were used to hunt small game some of which stolen off royal grounds for food for their owners.
More recently, Lurchers have been hunting companions for small game such as hares, foxes, rabbits, etc. They also excel in events such as lure coursing formerly hare coursingagility and obedience activities. Please click here if you are not redirected within a few seconds.

Historically a poacher's dog, lurchers in modern times are used as pets, hunting dogs and in racing. A lurcher is generally a cross between a sighthound and a working dog breed. In the U. Midwestcrosses with large scenthounds are fairly common.
The distinction in England between a greyhound and a lurcher was both legal and biological. Greyhounds were used to hunt legally only by the privileged upper class who could show qualification by sufficient income or estate. Anyone else with a lower income was, fromprohibited from hunting with any hound whatsoever, including a lurcher 'lerce' in Norman French . Brian Plummer identifies the Norfolk Lurcher as the predecessor of the modern lurcher.
Temperament is also variable, again dependent on parental influence.
Whippet vs Lurcher
As could be expected, lurchers with dominant sighthound attributes have similar temperaments—often fairly lazy with a good eye—however, accordingly, others are influenced by their other, often more tractable, biddable, and slower parent. As with all dogs, temperament will be modified by socialising the puppy. The word 'lurcher' is from Norman French Middle English lurch, to lurk or remain in a place furtively.
While it has been suggested the word 'lurcher' is from the Romani word for thief, the word for thief in Romani is "Chor". However, the archaic meaning of the word lurcher in English is a prowler, swindler, or petty thief. From the late 14th century in England, to the repeal of the Game Laws in Britain ofthose without financial qualification were prohibited from owning and hunting with any hunting dogs, including lurchers.
Generally, the aim of the cross is to produce a sighthound with more intelligence, a canny animal suitable for poaching rabbits, hares and game birds. Over time, poachers and hunters discovered that the crossing of certain breeds with sighthounds produced a dog better suited to this purpose, given the lurcher's combination of speed and intelligence.
The modern lurcher has left behind its old image of disrepute, and is now regarded as an exceptional family dog and many groups have been founded to rehome lurchers as family pets. The lurcher has as many varied uses as types can be crossbred, but generally they are used as hunting dogs that can chase and kill their prey.
Most lurchers today are used for general pest control, typically rabbitshares and foxesalthough some of the larger types have been successfully used on bigger game like wild boar and deer. Lurchers can be used for hare coursingalthough most hare coursing dogs are greyhounds.
Sighthound heavy lurchers move most effectively over open ground, although different crosses suit different terrains, indeed many crosses are specifically engineered for the purpose of working cover. Early breeders and breeders from as little as 50 years ago would often cull dogs and puppies that could not or would not work. This helped ensure the dogs being bred were able to do the job as asked. Breeders today will place these dogs into a home as a pet or have them sterilized. Is your whippet mix the best dog ever?

Click here to read the story of this lovely whippet cross. Lurchers are very popular dogs in UK, despite the fact that they are not a recognized breed. They come from a greyhound or whippet crossed with any other kind of dog, often a shepherd or a terrier.
Very popular are sighthound and collie crosses thanks to their speed, intelligence and endurance that make them exceptional hunting dogs. A cross between two sighthounds like a greyhound and deerhound are another kind of lurcher, often called longdogs.
Apparently the origin of the lurcher comes from the fact that commoners were not allowed to own greyhounds because only nobility had the privilege of owning and hunting with pure breed sighthounds. As the greyhound was the dog of the nobility, the lurcher became the hunting, multipurpose and companion dog of the commoners.
These dogs were bred originally by the gypsies.
They often have a rough coat that clearly differentiate them from the greyhounds and has the extra bonus of offering protection. The lurchers with a border collie in their pedigree, often display sheep herding abilities to boot.
This type of dog, due to its mixed background, is very heterogeneous, but the most common trait seems to be their intelligence and the gentle and affectionate nature that now makes of them very popular family dogs. Click on the link to see pictures and read more about them.

Although a terrier or pastoral dog mix is common, collie crosses are preferred by the hunters or poachers because mating a sighthound with a sheepdog produces a dog with great intelligence and agility. The lurchers have a variable appearance, since their size, coat type, and color is dependent on their parental influence.
These dogs are characterized by long, straight legs, a deep chest with greater lung capacity, small, dark, round eyes, and small, wire-haired ears. History Even though there is no accurate supportive documentation, it is believed that during the Middle Ages, the peasants and commoners in Britain were not permitted to own greyhounds, Scottish deerhounds, and Irish wolfhounds.
Therefore, the gypsies and peasants produced lurchers, the canny and intelligent dogs suitable for hunting game birds, hares and rabbits.
Having inherited the characteristics of sighthounds, the lurchers are a good, dutiful dog with strong hunting instincts and the ability to learn commands fast.
Since the lurcher dog is attached closely to its master, it could become destructive due to anxiety and stress when left alone. Lurchers have a natural tendency to steal food, making it imperative for the owners to keep an eye on them at mealtimes. They can have a devoted relationship with children if both are taught to be courteous of each other.
Since lurchers are fast learners, it is important to teach the puppies what is admissible behavior, making it understand what is wanted and what not. They react well to all kinds of dog sports, especially agility training, obedience training, dog racing, and lure coursing.
Their masters should employ varied, but interesting training methods for their dogs. They should be provided with a diet comprising essential minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, and proteins. Adult lurchers should be fed two meals regularly, one in the morning while the other in the early evening. Their diet can include dry or canned foods, ample water, and occasional treats like dog biscuits.Vue form generator
